A zoomed out shot of Kinkaku-ji. This time you can see the lake surrounding it. It was raining the day we went there.
The current Kinkaku-ji actually dates from 1950 when it was rebuilt. Kyoto was spared from the bombings of WWII, but in 1949 or 1950 or such, some crazy monk was all "I'M SO CRAZY OOGA-BOOGA-BOOGA BLAAAAAUUUGH!!!" and he set the original Kinkaku-ji on fire. Since it's a National Treasure to Japan, they rebuilt it in a hot hurry. (no pun intended)
